The list of benefits is long, as to why people find meditation. Reduced stress, lower hypertension, deeper sleep, better brain functioning, more creativity, self awareness, and inner fulfillment.
There are many types of great meditation out there, and many of them have significant effects on our well being. I've been a practitioner of Transcendental Meditation for almost 30 years. It's currently the most well researched practice out there, so if you are looking for a technique with a plethora of benefits that's accessible, check it out: www.tm.org
This is a little infographic on the 7 STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL MEDITATION (NOTE: This isn't a full practice in itself without being initiated into some form of meditation in step 4, but is more of a guideline for a successful practice).
- Sit comfortable, spine straight but relaxed.
- Close your eyes and scan your body. Notice anywhere that is tight or tense.
- Listen to the breath. Allow you mind to settle down. Ease away from the need to think. Relax deeper into breath.
- Begin your practice (whatever you are trained in) without stress or strain.
- Let thoughts pass by like clouds in the sky. They are a natural process, so let them come and go.
- After a comfortable time, stop your practice, keep your eyes closed for a bit, or lie on your back for deeper integration.
- After a few minutes, open your eyes. Return to full presence of your body, mind and emotions.
